Thank you for following this blog. Thank you for encouraging me to pursue a dream that the Lord has given me and for caring about my projects!! I have decided to start blogging on wordpress and merge our family blog with the design blog. House Update!

We've been so thankful for the past few days of clear skies. They're making great progress on our house! We even got to enjoy the big trucks while they poured the foundation. The kids really enjoyed this part! Even going as far as to yell at the workers "You are building my house...I am moving when it's sunny!" Thankfully, for everyone, they couldn't hear them above the loud equipment.

Little Man's Bedding Collection: Know When to Splurge and When to Save

I've been working on his room for a while now, knowing the look I wanted, but also knowing that it would not be achieved with a bed-in-a-bag.

His frame came from a thrift store and it's solid! After cleaning it up, it's in fantastic shape. I paid $50 for the entire frame.

I have 3 sheet sets for his bed. Staying with the greens or browns. The striped set (on his bed in the picture) is my favorite! I found that Ross is a great place to get sheet sets for cheap! They're not amazing quality, and you won't find me sleeping on them, but for a child they work great!

The two Euro shams are from Ikea. It was a set that came with a queen size coverlet that I currently have on my bed. They are a quilted material that's super thick and the perfect masculine touch I was looking for.

The brown pillow was from Target several years back for $4.99 (clearance) and I think it's been on every bed in our house at one point.

The burlap pillow was made for me by a friend using burlap from JoAnne's and a pillow form I already had.

Now for the splurge...the only thing in his room that was new (besides his dresser) when it came into our house. Like I said, his room has taken a while to piece together! His quilt and dinosaur sham are from Pottery Barn Kids.

I have my reasons.

1. He is very hard on things. I needed a thick comforter that was quality enough to stand up to him. That I could wash. That was dark to hide stains. That was neutral enough to grow with him.

2. It's very hard to find cute boy bedding.

3. I wanted it to lay nicely on the bed and look quality. So sometimes that means that you have to buy quality.

4. I had been very thrifty with the rest of his room and this was worth it.

5. I used my own birthday money...oh yes, I did.

I like that his bedding is not from an entire set. I like that it's pieced together for a specific look. It is all boy and it still fits into my design plan.

Kitchen Faucet

This beautiful thing is the American Standard (4332.300.002)Pull Down Kitchen Faucet with Lever Handle, in case you feel the need to introduce yourself.

It's new to the market and beautiful in all it's streamlined goodness and polished chrome intrigue.

I knew it was perfect for my house based on the following:

1. It matched my appliances

2. It was one hole (and would greatly minimize sink mildew that tends to creep around each hole, even in the cleanest homes)

3. My husband likes the pull-out sprayer; I like that you can't tell it's a pull-out faucet

4. It's from a quality company and it will look good for years to come.

We chose to purchase from a local company, but there are many sites online that have great selection to choose from.

Kitchens

My husband and I are currently having a home built. I get to choose all the finishes and I am LOVING it.

Currently kitchens are on my mind. More specifically, the concept of open shelving. Generally speaking I cannot stand anything to be cluttered. Especially, my design. Open shelving has a bad reputation. It conjures up images of clutter and distraction.

However. I have found there are redeeming images. There are ways to do it gracefully.

1. Common color theme.

In my opinion, it looks more organized and clean when there is color matching or organization on the shelves. It lets the flow of the room continue unhindered.

2. Purposeful Placement.

Keep track of what you have displayed. If open shelving is in a kitchen, the items should be in use. Schedule a regular time to clean the shelves off and remove items no longer used or ones that may have become stained or chipped. Common items that are used in open shelving design are plates, glasses, pitchers.

3. Specific Task.

Besides liking the design element, it will assist in streamlining your open shelving appearance, if you assign a specific function to your shelf. Such as, plates.

Master Bedroom

We're one step closer. It's not finished but it's getting there. Most of my decorating efforts are for the rest of the house, because that is the room most people will see. However, I feel like I've been ignoring my room way too long.

Over Christmas, my husband bought me a new bedside lamp! It literally was to replace a broken one we'd been using. Yes, I said broken! I would never have let another room get away with that kind of offense.

So here is the room at night...a work in progress. The sign is one I made after I saw it on Flower Patch Farmgirl's site. Love her!!

Bedside Table

Yes, I know. It's March. But, it did snow last week...does that excuse the fact that my last post was for Christmas?!

In my defense though...this little man makes it very hard to sit and post. He also makes it very hard to finish a project to post about!

But this little man also inspired this recent project! He needed a bedside table. Yes, sippy cups, board books, and flashlights need their place! So, maybe his Mama thought his room needed a bedside table!

I did not want to spend money. I did not want to search for the perfect thing.

I did want it to be cute. And easy.

When I was cleaning his room the other day, his suitcase caught my eye. I bought it when he was born for a room decoration. It just sits doing nothing on his dresser. But I realized it was the perfect size for beside his bed. He can store treasures and hide treasures! I painted some legs that I had on hand. The base board is just stained plywood. It's actually the perfect size for a basket. Enjoy!

I may eventually add some casters to the bottom, but I just finished and I was too excited not to post it!

Merry Christmas 2010

Sometimes we don't see situations for the blessing they are intended to be. Often the biggest blessings come in the disguise of the biggest frustrations. I wonder if this is the way Mary felt when she heard of the census order?

How dare Caesar Augustus order a census the same time her baby was due. The logistics of this were all wrong. She was young, scared, and very pregnant. She would be away from all she knew. Away from her family. Traveling far...at the worst possible time. To a little town that would be very crowded.

Every new mother wants her baby to have their time. Their welcoming. Their own place. I wonder if Mary felt like all of that would be lost in the midst of their traveling. In the midst of everyone's distractions.

God knew differently. He knew His plan. His time. His welcoming. God knew that His place for Jesus was going to be in a manger with two ordinary people that were going to welcome and raise the Son of God. Talk about the ultimate way to disguise a blessing!! A blessing that would change eternity!

This blessing was "good news of a great joy that will be for ALL the people." This blessing was worthy of the appearance of a multitude of Heavenly Hosts...singing in the sky!

Even if it did not start out the way Mary had planned, she was able to treasure up all of these things in her heart. Her baby boy; they called Him Jesus.

This blessing that took place so long ago is still very much our blessing today. A great joy for ALL people. An opportunity for us to experience life forevermore.

Glory to God in the Highest...truly a merry Christmas to all.

Holiday Tip...Frame Pictures/Magazine Pictures for Art

I wanted to dress up our foyer and hallway with some holiday cheer...but the decorating budget was zero. So, I pulled out my holiday magazines that had come and then been tucked away. There was art and holiday cheer for free!

(This tip works the best with smaller pictures; it is a little less obvious that they are magazine pages that way! Thanks to my December issue of Better Homes and Gardens and my holiday issue of Pottery Barn)

I showed you the play room festivities, but here is downstairs. It's more of the classic tones...the grown up decor. The holidays have so many different tones, I feel that it's fine to have different tones in your home as well. Just avoid doing it all in the same space. Avoid the clashing or busy looks.

This is the playroom at night. The kiddos and the toys are all put to bed and the colored lights twinkle. I chose to decorate with festive colors and non-breakable ornaments to keep the fun up and the stress down! The kids got to be a part of the decorating since this is mostly their space.

You may notice my "mantel" is not really. However, in a rental home, you do not always choose the foundations of your home. We love the rental home we are in, but I no longer have a mantel. Thus, a shelf is a great option when your decorating needs call for a mantel. This particular model is the Lack Shelf from Ikea. When decorating a fun space, it is often easier and cheaper to save items to use for later decoration. The nesting boxes were from a chocolate company that wrapped chocolates came in one year. The candy was wrapped, so the nesting boxes were ready to use! The ornament wreath was a DIY project with balls from the dollar tree. My point being that decorations, especially in the holidays do not have to be difficult or expensive. A little creativity will save your self...stress and money!

Incorporating Family Traditions Into Your Home's Atmosphere

As I began preparing for Christmas this year, I have to slow myself down. It becomes so easy, when decorating, to pull everything out quickly. To know where it looks good. To hurry the process along and move onto the next item on your list. It seems especially rushed this year because we are in a new home and I'm still trying to decide on everything while balancing my small children. They are so busy and into everything...it changes how you're able to decorate! Oh how I remember the days I didn't have to factor "reaching fingers" into my placement of breakables!

I want to avoid that pitfall this season. I want to slow down and remember traditions. Remember people. Remember what Christmas is really about. Sure, I have my bins of decorations ready. But as I take out each item, I want to show my children where they come from. What they mean to our family. Why I want them to know. To remember. Decorations are beautiful but if they are tied with memories, they become treasures. In today's world, we need treasures. We need things to mean something because we're all on a budget and cannot always go out and buy new decorations. We need to find value and joy in what we have and who we are with!

This season, Shutterfly, is aiding us in the process of our traditions becoming treasures. They are providing 50 free cards for writing about their promotion on your blog! Now, these are beautiful, quality, stationary-like greeting cards! The tradition of sending cards has become my favorite over the years. As a little girl, I remember my mom writing a letter every year and picking pictures of what we had done. Now, I know what a feat that is! It's almost impossible to pick out a picture where everyone is behaving, looking joyful, even looking at the camera at all! Haha. As I look at their selection, I do believe they could make any family picture look presentable! One of my favorites that I may use is their ""It's the Most Wonderful Time of Year">The Most Wonderful Time of Year" selection. It's a classic look but also has room for 1 photo. Like I mentioned, I have young children. One happy picture is a Christmas miracle!!

I love sending our cards out and I love receiving them! It always amazes me how much changes in a year and how much kids and families grow! Each one we receive helps me remember how God has been so faithful. When I was little, my sister and I would sit with the stack of cards and talk about the friends. We'd read letters as a family, praying for the people. And, of course, we always had certain cards we looked forward to! I remember hoping when I was little that one day I could send out cards like the ones that Shutterfly offers.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

I think I'm feeling like it needs to be Christmas because it's snowing outside, and that only seems right for it to be snowing at Christmas. Snow is pretty and it decorates the outdoors naturally.

I'm busy trying to get the house cleaned and harvest decor put away before we go out of town. That way, we'll return to a blank canvas that is ready for Christmas!

A Closer look at the Bonus Room

This is a bonus room upstairs...It's BIG. So instead of letting my furniture collect on the walls and have a canyon of carpet in the middle of the room, I made little areas that connected but had their own identity. It gave the room purposes. And with purpose, anything can shine!

Close Ups:

These shelves are from Ikea. The both of them were $8. They are on the wall to the left of my desk. The white cups (from Target) house scissors, erasers, and pencils. The 2 baskets (Ikea) have some crayons, puzzels, special "ask permission" selections :-).

This is a Lack Shelf from Ikea that was previously in my son's nursery. Everything on it comes from different areas of my house. Yes, that's a cinder block with moss on it that I found outside in the backyard of our previous home. You just need a little inspiration and careful boundaries and most things can become decor.

This lamp was one of a matching set that I got at a garage sale this past summer. I got the both of them for $12. They were dirty and brassy gold...oh what a can of spray paint can do. I used one whole can on both lamps together of just a glossy white. The lamp shade was $10 at Ikea. SO, for $16 and some time, I have a big, white, statement lamp that is the size normally going for around $40-$70 at retail stores.

This is a chalkboard I made with an old frame, a piece of sheet metal (so it's a magnetic chalkboard), and a jar of chalkboard paint. We've had this for a while. It's perfect for practicing letters and magnents but also for those priceless art pieces. Side Note: When one colors, I mean practices writing her name, in Sharpie on the chalkboard...it will be there until you repaint.

Decorate Play Rooms with learning items or toys themselves. It is good to have a balance and do it with style, but books, for instance, are perfect decor for a room where children will spend their time. I got this whole set of Time Life "First Library of Learning" books for $9 at a farmer's market. They'll be perfect for spontaneous learning as my kids get older.

Last but certainly not least, STORAGE! I know in the decorating world, this is the most common solution you hear most often. But, that's because it works. Just because a room has toys in it does not mean you have to see all of them. all. the. time. I believe in having toys put away. I believe in kids learning how to do it themselves. Baskets/totes are perfect for age-appropriate responsibility. Even my little man, who is 16 months old, knows how to put his toys away in these canvas boxes. Each kind of toy has it's own box. We got this particular unit at Costco. It comes with the linen colored canvas boxes. 8 of them. And they are very deep. Side note: We clean out our toys a lot. We don't keep toys if the kids are past the stage, if the toy is missing parts, or if it is never played with. We have an annual garage sale and we clean up! It allows for a refreshed feel and to have room when the next stage of playing is approaching.

We're slowly making a home. It started as a very nice house. but. I can't. I can't live in a house. I can't make memories in a house. I can't raise my kids in a house.

That is why. Even a rental house. Can be made into a home. I don't know how long we will be here. But we will take care of this house and make the most of our time here where we have been blessed.

This will be our home. It's not to my standards yet, but we are getting there. Enjoy the glimpses. More to come.

(I will show full rooms soon. Side note: Random red chairs are usually around an adorable table, but a "party" for lovies was currently being held. Like I said, we're home!)

TOO LONG...and Some Transformations

We have had such a summer...busy like we never planned and not even close to letting up. We're moving in 2 weeks and praying our house (that has been on the market for 1year) sells before then!

I have been doing projects but the thought of sitting down and blogging them takes more time than I've had, let alone getting it accomplished. Right now, I'm determined to finish this post!

Leaning Mirror:(Anna Kintigh Version $13)

We (my husband and I) had a unframed mirror that we'd purchased a while back for $10. We secured it to a piece of plywood backer that was cut bigger than the mirror. Then we secured old fence boards, which were already just hanging out board in our garage. Once those were secured and framed out, I used Dark Walnut Minwax and stained it with a couple of coats.

I'm so excited with how this turned out. I primed it with a carmel toned paint (my free paint that I got in a promotion). Then I painted two coats of a butter yellow that I had on hand from my daughter's bedroom. After that I distressed it with some sand paper and a couple of my husband's scraper tools that I saw when my sand paper ran out! Then, I glazed it. I used a Benjamin Moore glaze that was clear and I just tinted it with some brown paint I already had.

Modern Bird Studio

A little bit ago, I won a giveaway from Just A Girl!! It is so exciting to win anything, but when it's an amazing prize, it's even better. I was beside myself to walk through the Modern Bird Studio experience. When I call it an "experience," I'm not exaggerating. Each step in deciding,choosing, and seeing your unique piece is so fun and memorable!

Gregg and Megan Deal are very nice people and after the e-mails back and forth with Megan...I'm pretty sure we're friends :-) They are extremely generous with their talents and I feel privileged and honored to have one of their pieces in my home. They work very hard to guarantee you are pleased with the final product.

I chose a wedding photo and selected the combination of yellow creme and buckeye brown. It's perfect in my room. I'm just so pleased with it...I can't even fully describe how fun it is to have a completely unique piece of artwork.

As I'm just starting out, I can't say that it's worth much to feature Modern Bird Studio on my blog, but it's the least I can do to say thank you! I hope you enjoy the pictures. Please check out their fabulous site and look into getting your memories put into timeless works of art!!

Day #3...Project #3. Junk Drawer.

I hope it's not terribly abnormal that I needed the incentive of a blog challenge to assist in the cleaning out of my kitchen junk drawer. But, I did.

Pretty straight forward. Dirty drawer emptied. 3 piles for stuff: Put back in drawer, throw away, and put away in real spot. Shocking that the biggest pile was throw away when the drawer is located right next to the cupboard with the garbage can. Really?!

This is proof that the little projects in a home, when completed, can refresh your spirit and allow you to feel a sense of achievement. Even though most people never saw the cluttered drawer, my kitchen feels so much cleaner without the knowledge of the drawer's mess lingering in my head.

The cupboard below the drawer also got cleaned out. I relocated the items into other cupboards and filled it with toys instead. It is a 2 door cupboard that I have not found a successful child-lock for. Rather than getting upset about it, when my son would open the doors and play...I put his stuff in there. Not surprising that the cupboard lost its appeal. Maybe someday I'll sneak my stuff back!

Day #2...Project #2. The Generational Art

I wanted to have something above my daughter's dresser. Everything in her room has been pieced together very carefully, because I've had a desired look in my head throughout the entire process.

So, I decided upon a mural of sorts with artwork pieces that each had a meaning. It started when my mom gave me the picture of the little girl rocking (from when I was young). Then I found an antique plate from my Grandma. Finally, a sign, I had made. 3 pieces...3 generations. Great Grandma, Grammy, and Momma. Now it is finally above her dresser is finished and I'm so pleased. The handmade lace collar laying on her dresser is from my Aunt...my daughter's Great Aunt. 1 more special piece...1 more generation.

Even in her decorations, I want my daughter to know there are a lot of women before her that have contributed to her person. She is a very loved little girl.

Day #1...Project #1. The Baseboards

We're out of town for a few days, so I worked on a few of my "days" before leaving. Hence the multiple days and projects, that are actually posted on the same day!

I really wanted to get my baseboards cleaned up. Usually I noticed how much they needed it right before leaving because the house was being shown or right before someone came over. It's not like you wake up in the morning just wishing that there was nothing on your calendar...so you could just have a fun afternoon washing your baseboards!

So, I did it. It's accomplished. I'll let you in on a little secret too. The Kirkland brand of baby wipes, from Costco, did the trick. Cleaned my baseboards and ceiling fans like magic. They're inexpensive and disposable...magic, I tell you!

Look Brand New! Please note that your arms (from scrubbing) and your knees (from kneeling) will become quite sore during the process...just like any form of beauty, baseboard beauty is achieved through patience, time, and hard work!

So, although I've been MIA the past few weeks, my mind is still full of projects. Life. is. just. CRAZY.

SO, I've been soaking in others' talents and enjoying what they have to offer. I am really feeling like I'd love to be real friends with Lindsey Cheney. She is the incredible woman behind The Pleated Poppy. So. INCREDIBLY. talented and adorable. If we were to ever meet and become friends, it may not last long...because I may want to move into her adorable house and borrow her always stylish wardrobe. Not weird. Just admiring. Don't judge.

If you have time. Get a cup of coffee and sit down. You'll enjoy it too and then you will know what I mean. She has a lot of followers, so my shout out is not boosting her blog world. I know. But, I always love finding new friends, so I thought you might too!! Enjoy!!

Old Refridgerator

Another item that my dearest friend Betsey had in the garage sale, that mysteriously made its way into my home, were 2 blue, metal drawers from an old refrigerator. SO cute! I love them.

I used one to organize all of my cleaning supplies underneath my sink. The other one is on my son's dresser holding his pacifiers and books. I only have a picture of underneath my sink because the other placement is in the room of a sleeping child...that's common knowledge, no matter how desperate you are for a cute blog picture...you. do. NOT. disturb. a. sleeping. baby.

A Memory for Sophie

My mom gave me a picture a little bit ago that was hanging in my room when I was little. It's a precious print of a little girl rocking her baby.

I wanted it for my little girl's room, but I was not loving the frame. Enter a little yellow paint and my favorite wood stain. Now it's an antique looking frame for a little girl's room. I am so glad my daughter can enjoy this picture too.

I made the "happily ever after" sign a while ago for her room. It will hang beneath the picture, as soon as my hubby comes home to help me!

Let's "Chunk" the framing up...

I had this picture framed in my room, just leaning against the wall, but it was missing something. I have a fascination with this picture. It's not completely my style, but I still love it. Mostly in part because I got it at the Dollar Tree. Yes, you did read that right. I found this picture (which is a poster) at my local store and paid $1 for it. I brought my prize home and it fit perfectly into a frame I already had. I spray painted the frame and attached the brown ribbon.

(This was all about a year ago)

Then...we had a garage sale last weekend. And my dearest friend Betsey did it with me. And she brought way too many really cute items to sell. And a good portion of them ended up in my house. I don't think my husband is going to let me have garage sales with her anymore.

Enter the old chunky window frame with amazing, original patina.

I hung the window frame on the wall and tied the ribbon around the top, centering the picture in the middle of it. Now it looks like a custom art piece. No one would suspect that I paid $6+ a few things on hand for it!

It's a fun addition while I try to add some splashes of yellow (the honey tone) into my room.

A Chair Project

So, the garage sale went well and somehow it's now Wednesday night...and my garage still looks like I could open it up and have a sale this coming weekend. That. is. not. good.

Oh well. When I should have been cleaning it up, I did a project instead! I got this chair at a garage sale a couple of years ago for FREE. And it was ugly wood...perfect for projects!

I painted it yellow then with a small can of oops paint I also scored for FREE!

I just took a piece of extra rough sandpaper to the edges and sanded until I didn't want to. Then I stenciled a "K" for our last name on the seat. After that paint was mostly dry, I covered the entire chair in Minwax furniture polish. It aged it perfectly. I believe it the "provential" shade.

Lamp Update

My parents have had this lamp for as long as I can remember:

It's been in my mom's family a long time, so it's beautiful and special. It's also in need of an update! My parents were remodeling and gave it to me. I love the base. I've seen a lot like it in stores lately, but this lamp is a lot more long-lasting than what you would find at a local store these days. It is also sentimental.

I decided if it had a new shade; it would look refreshed and ready to be placed! I got the shade at Goodwill. It was $5, but it was the right color tag...so I paid $2.50!! Such a deal. I got the fabric at Joanne's. It was $7.99 a yard, but I had a 40% off coupon, thus making it about $4.80 for a yard. With a little work, spray adhesive, hot glue gun, my dear friend Aimee. She helped me make the pattern and spray the shade to adhere the fabric (it takes lots of hands and laughs).

For about $7, I have a whole new lamp with lots of meaning! I'm so pleased with how it looks and fits into the room!

Mantel Redecorated

I am inspired by beautiful spaces. I think this is why I look at each of my magazines until they're completely worn out, by the time the next issue comes. I love "tablescaping" because it is a decorating element that invites you into the space and delights your spirit. It makes me feel like something special is about to happen and if someone stops by, it makes them feel like I was hoping they would come.
The element of real living in these sophisticated settings is that you "scape" with everyday items.
The following pictures are from my home because I staged it today for our open house. At least when the open house failed, I still had my pretty tables!

To show you how attainable this can be, I'll tell you where I found my items and the prices. I am telling you...anyone with any budget can live in sophisticated settings!

My Outdoor Oasis:

Table: A "gift" from someone who moved and didn't want to move it! (Free. The edge of the table was a faded green around the glass and the legs. We sprayed it black for new life!)

Chairs: Walmart last summer ($20 ea)

Place mats: Pier 1 Imports almost 4 years ago (Free for a wedding present, but they were $5 ea)

Plates: Winco (that's right...Winco, as in the grocery outlet store) 2 winters ago ($0.48 ea)

Napkins: Fred Meyer in the outdoor section ($1.99 for package of 50 and I already needed them for my son's birthday party!)

Lanterns: Fred Meyer in the outdoor section ($3.99 ea)

Rug: Overstock.com last summer ($199 and free shipping. This rug is in many stores for over $300)

Lemons/Limes: Albertsons Grocery Store ($12 including the ones inside too. I will also use these for marinades and in my water)

Candlestick: Garage Sale ($1 and I sprayed it red)

Vase: Pier 1 Imports (Free for Wedding present, but it was $15)

As you can see it just takes a little creativity and the willingness to hunt down good deals and use "collections" that come from different seasons and different years.

Today I chose to create my dream living room. A combination of West Elm and Pottery Barn, makes this designer girl very happy. This living room is expensive, but I was dreaming and held no expense. Beautiful quality.

If you cannot afford these items, stores like Home Goods and Target will often produce replicas at more budget-friendly prices.

The bones of the room:

Manhattan Leather Studio Sofa (from Pottery Barn, Camel, $2699)
Manhattan Leather Studio Chair and a half (from Pottery Barn, Espresso, $2199)

I purposely chose coordinating colors in the same piece for a visual flow while preventing the space from becoming stagnate.

Manhattan Leather Studio Ottoman (from Pottery Barn, Espresso, $499x 2)

I would place these in front of the camel toned sofa.

The Zebra Rug (from West Elm, 9x12, $749) would ground the space and provide a unique flavor to the warm and modern space.

I chose to accent in antique reds with furniture that provide the pop of green an even greater impact.

Leena Media Consol (from Pottery Barn, Red, $499)
Emmet Cabinet Side Table (from Pottery Barn, Red, $399)

I would dress the windows in Espresso toned Dupioni Silk Pole Pocket Drapes from Pottery Barn (50x96, $99 per panel). The silk would add depth and texture while the espresso tone would blend with the space.

The Celeste Chandelier from Pottery Barn ($299) would provide lighting from above.

The Jewelery of the Room:

The main accessories I used were from the new Patch NYC collection at West Elm! I love this collection and it was such a privilege to design a room around these items.

I used the Pear Thistle pillows and the Ivory Rose pillows ($34 for each cover). I would place several of these all over the sofa and chair.

I would also place the framed thistle and framed rose on the wall in a vertical fashion ($34 each).

Next to the West Elm Patch NYC art, I would place horizontal and vertical pieces of Amalia Elena Veralli's Green and White Tulips-2009 (Pottery Barn, $399 each).

These art pieces would be on the wall in a collection style above the sofa...

I also chose to accent with the Hanging Bud Vases (Pottery Barn, $12.99 clearance).

The Eagan Multipanel Mirror (Pottery Barn, $699).
This mirror would be placed above the consol to hide the TV which is recessed into the wall.

I would place the Brookshire Ceramic Lamp (Pottery Barn, $199) on the side table.

A Project To Come

I've been hoping to work on some more furniture, but I've also been hoping to come across a great deal. Today was the day!

I found two tables (an end table and a coffee table) on Craigslist for $25!! They are both solid oak. Scratched up, but with beautiful bones and ready to be painted! Although I'm not yet sure what color I'm doing,I'm so excited.

{Ignore the fact that they are in my van/garage...the only downside to the solid part is that they are so heavy and I can't move them myself!}

I saw this quote in the new May issue of Better Homes and Gardens. It caught my attention lately because this season of spring is so inspiring, especially in our homes. The colors are bright and the air is fresh and it's popular to clean obsessively!

I took the opportunity to catch some spring in my home. Enjoy the pictures and let yourself be inspired by the ideas or colors.

Molding

I love molding and it is a fairly inexpensive way to create custom art. I have a molding focal wall in my family room!

I painted a section with the darker color on the same color card that I used for the wall's color.

I then outlined and measured for the molding squares.

In the center are two candle sconces that have been in almost every room in my house. I got them several years ago at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. They were on clearance and originally black!

The green toy storage you see with the baskets was a section of old cabinets in our kitchen. When we remodeled the kitchen we added molding and painted it. I got the baskets at Ikea.

I have a serious relationship with chalkboard paint. I'm head over heals in love...if I had time, I would do a project with it. every. day.

Now, my relationship just went to the next level thanks to Hudson paint. They have 24 colors of chalkboard paint. No longer are you stuck with the classic look. Your possibilities are endless!!

My mind is going crazy as the ideas spill over each other. It's quite expensive so you have to know exactly what you're going to do with it. That won't stop me from dreaming.

Maybe. one day. there will be. that lucky project. For now, you can swoon too...at Hudson Paint.

My Mantels

I LOVE decorating mantels. While I don't care for my corner frustration in the living room; I have enjoyed the challenge in practicing design tricks. I have loved my family room mantel.

Here is my corner mantel in the living room:

Pictures of my kiddos and some touches of spring. All of the milk glass and white pottery was purchased at Goodwill for around $8. I cleaned it up and onto the mantel it went. The flowers and branches were used in my wedding almost 4 years ago and the basket was from a baby shower.

The Family Room Mantel:

This mantel was originally on a different wall, up way too high, and white (when we moved in). It was painted green when I decided that the family room would be my black and white room with apple green accents. I found the empty frame at a garage sale for a $1 and painted it black. The white chalkboard is the Lettered Cottage inspired one that I made here. You can't really tell, but I wrote the word "grace" in several languages. The pictures, shots from Europe, were taken by my sister in law. She has such a good eye! This mantel is a favorite of mine to decorate and gets switched up quite a bit!

Saturday Project RECAP

Yesterday, we did head out to Bring Recycling, as a family. We "found some treasures," but that project will have to wait for another day. I do not have all the pieces yet, and if I'm really trying to reproduce something for cheap...I have to be patient!

Seeing as that would have to wait, I took a trip over to G.W. (Goodwill) during nap time. I found these pictures

Special, I know...but if you are going to change an item completely, it's best if it's hideous, I mean special, beforehand. It just makes for better pictures that way! These 2 pictures were the perfect size frames and they were an additional 25% off their already cheap price!

Now, to the project. I was on Layla's (The Lettered Cottage) blog the other day, and was super inspired by her double-framed chalkboard. Check it out here. I had to make one of my own.

I'm in love with my outcome!

I gutted the frames (Goodwill $7 for both).
Put a piece of plywood in the large frame (on hand from my hubby's garage).
Painted a square of chalkboard paint (on hand--who doesn't) and topped it with the smaller frame that is raised.
I sanded the edges to "age" it.
Now, it's going to wait 3 days (per the paint instructions) to be seasoned with chalk and used!! Which means, I have 3 days to find the perfect spot for it because it wasn't just an inch too big to be on my mantel, like I originally intended...no, I would not do that!

Total Cost: $7 and an afternoon...not bad!

Our Day

As my little lady gets older and is able to do more in her day, I want to have a plan. I want to make sure she is achieving the appropriate milestones for her age. With my good intentions, often comes fatigue from the night before or distractions from the younger brother or a forgetfulness that I blame on previous pregnancies!

I love charts but was never able to find what I wanted...until I found an old wooden frame at G.W. I just sanded it and polished it with a little wood stain. I then painted a board with chalkboard paint (my project "go-to"). With my paint pen, I made a chart with each activity/chore I wanted her to accomplish in a day. A schedule of sorts. She has the satisfaction of checking things off. I have a reminder of things I'd like to help her learn. We have a more productive day!

Brick Bookends

I wanted to put some of my son's books on his dresser but I wanted to make sure any bookends I used would not visually fight with his decor. Then I remembered we have quite a bit of old brick by the side of our home...visually perfect and free!

I cleaned the brick up
Hot glued the cloth to the base, so it wouldn't scratch his dresser
Had free bookends

2. Do not substitute plush/beauty for practicality. You can have both. Now days, you can find beautiful design and prints for your fabrics and accessories in outdoor materials or paint. You can have beautiful cushions and accessories outside without fearing their demise.

3. Don't forget lighting. Just like indoors, lighting is a necessity to enjoy the space for any length of time and it also provides intimacy and ambiance. There are a variety of options for your outdoor space from candles to lamps to hanging sconces, chandeliers, and lanterns.

4. Set the style. From your accessories to your "tablescaping," you will want to coordinate your style for a complete setting. Don't forget to set your table or bar for a finished look.

5. Use Your resources. Make it easy and decorate with your surroundings. Enjoy the foliage in season. Collect a unique array of vases to display your flowers and greenery that is in bloom. It will warm your space with a readiness for any upcoming event.

I just finished a design consultation and I thought I would share what exactly you get when you set up a consultation with me. On the side of my page it states that you can schedule to have a detailed room consultation for $30 an hour. Follow this link and you can view the notes I put together for you afterward. This is the one I just sent off to the client. Each set of notes is specific to you and the rooms we have discussed when I meet with you. If you are not in the area, you can e-mail pictures of the space and we can talk over the phone or by e-mail together.

Mood Board

As we've had a few days to taste warmer weather, my inspiration came to develop my dream outdoor space. The budget is beyond what I would normally work with, but this is just for fun. It can, of course, be modified to fit a real budget. Here's to warmer days, longer nights, and many memories amongst friends!

My inspiration began with the Andalusia Rug from West Elm, in Horizon. (9'x12' for $649)
As you lay that down, your space is created. No matter what you are working with outdoors, your inspired living has begun in that rectangle. You can and you will fall in love with your outdoor oasis.

I then set up my Riviera Sectional from Pottery Barn, in Stone. (4-piece for $2,092)
I chose the stone colored cushions so I could launch my color use with accents rather than furniture. I may choose a different color pallet in future seasons. This is a contemporary piece that has a depth of warmth because of the inviting cushions.

I also added the matching armless chair. ($349)
I do not always "match" furniture when creating a space. However, this was a great neutral find that still had personality. I will bring other visual interest in by mixing some other furniture and side tables.

In front of the sectional, I would place 2 of the Pottery Barn Capri Coffee Cubes ($299 each). By adding the element of wicker, with this piece, you have the interest of a different texture than the sectional. It is the same rich espresso color, so it does not create a visual conflict.

Topping the sectional and chair, I chose to bring color in by using Sadie Outdoor Pillows and Sunbrella Outdoor Pillows (in Peridot) from Pottery Barn ($32-49 each). I love the yellow from the West Elm rug. As that is grounding our space, it is a launching pad fro color. I will bring in several colors to add life by pulling from the Sadie Pillow pallet. The floral design will give us options.

Off to the side, I added the Portofino 3 piece Bistro Set. It's from Costco Online ($99). This will add functionality in a classy way and enable an eating area on those warm evenings! It is in the same dark espresso as our furniture.

Now to accessorizing!!

I chose to use 2 Gothic Lanterns from Pottery Barn ($269 each). The lines of this piece seemed to mimic the design in our inspiration West Elm Rug. By remembering the design of the grounding element in our room, and repeating it above, it will bring continuity to the space.

There is also the Bristol Floor Lamp from Costco Online ($259).

Flanking either side of the sectional are 2 side tables. The Martini Side Table in Persimmon ($129) and the Rustic Block Side Table in Chocolate ($99) from West Elm add surface and visual interest. By not matching exactly, they add an artistic flare without fighting.

The romance element will be brought in by the candlelight. Contained by the Recycled Glass ($19-39 each) are pillar candles in Pomegranate Quince,Lapsang Tea, and Rosemary. These are West Elm $6 each.

I also displayed candles in the Chloe Lanterns ($65) from Pottery Barn.

While this space is expensive, you can take one idea or multiple for your area. Even just changing up some pillows or adding a few candles can refresh you.

Office Nook Completion

I am so excited to finally have completed my office nook. This desk took so much longer than I ever imagined, but now that I see it...I'm so pleased!

I asked my husband to build a box to "house" all the cords under the desk. I think it hides them quite well. I love not seeing all the craziness.

Tip of the Day

When you are painting, using a roller, and need to take a break or are letting it dry and do not want to let the roller go to waste...you can put it in a bag (sandwich or grocery style...plastic) and stick it in the fridge. This will keep the paint from drying and it will be ready to go and paint some more when you are!

Changing the Look of Your Space Without $$

Today, especially, it is crucial to have creative, free ideas when desiring a new look. Just because there is a lack of funds for new design, does not mean there is a lack of desire for new design in any given space.
The following are quick, easy solutions to finding a new look:

1. Start with an empty space.
Often, for your mind to move past what the space has looked like, it may need to see the space literally cleaned out. If you want to drastically change a look or re-purpose a space, it will be worth the effort to clean it out. Make a list of what you desire for the space or what you must achieve in the space.

2. Bring things back, based on need, one piece at a time.
When moving items back in, only allow something to reenter if it fulfills a need that you have established for that room. If it is something that was previously in the space, try a new spot for it. Move all the big items first, before trying to accessorize. Once you have the furniture in place, you will get a feel for where the gaps are.

3. Shop in your own home.
We often lose sight of our own accessories or decorations if they have been in the same spot too long. When trying to achieve a new look, go shopping in a different room of your house. Finding a new location, for even just a couple things, can brighten up a space and bring new interest to loved items.

4. Less is more.
When designing a space, it does not always need to be filled. If you allow your color palette to speak to your design rather than objects doing all the decorating, you will find it easier to see a change in your room. Often, when you desire a change, you are simply needing more space. A rearrangement and de-cluttering is all you need.

5. Repurpose.
Decorating with objects that need to be in the space or finding a new design element to something basic in your home will provide a new look. Things like a glass, drink pitcher can look like an art piece or the simple framing of child's art or a special letter can provide new, sentimental design. Something like b00ks can provide height for a light fixture.

Bang For Your Buck:

If you have small funds and are looking for your biggest change, invest in color and or window treatments. Painting a new color on the walls can be as inexpensive as $25, but will transform the room's appearance. Curtains will soften windows and add design to any space, especially if color cannot be changed or added (like in a rental situation). A bold print can be used to liven up a space, while using a color similar to the wall will open up a space and add a visual interest through texture.

The Chair

I painted the chair frame in the accent green of my family room, because this chair will live with my desk, in the family room. I painted the color and then I painted a sealer. Letting it dry is the hardest part. Then, I used an old twin-size bed sheet (1/2 off at G.W.) to reupholster the seat; it's a charcoal gray pinstripe.

I will begin by showcasing (paint selection, furniture choices/arrangement, decor ideas, etc.) our home, room by room. My husband and I have gutted, remodeled, and decorated our entire home together. While construction is not on the service list :-), you can see how I have designed our home, following each remodel. Each room will have a design point, that will hopefully help you as you apply these suggestions into your home situation.

Living Room:
Point: Pick a main color and coordinating colors. Although, I have decorated with red, there are also many elements in browns and yellows that coordinate. Patterns can be used to add visual interest, if done carefully and in small doses. Decor can become a "set" when paired together in color or size groupings. Groupings should be odd numbers (i.e. 3 or 5 items). There should be space, when walking into a room, to enter without scooting around large items. Area rugs add color and help to warm up a space.

Dining Room:
Point: When choosing a table for your room, give enough space to walk around the table. Decorate with simplicity as you will always be bringing a variety of natural elements in, with your meals. If using candles to add ambiance, choose ones that are fragrance free as to no fight with your food scents.

Kitchen:
Point: Wall color can add excitement into a space without taking up precious prep space. Using warm and similar-blend colors for elements such a counter, tile, and cabinetry will visually give you more room. If you want to update your kitchen without replacing cabinets, hardware is an inexpensive and quick way to change the look. Use a contrasting dark color on your flooring to your cabinets in order to draw your eye upward into the main space. Carry the wall color through your spaces, when connected, to allow your eye to travel while preventing a chopped space.

Master Bedroom:
Point: Colors such as greens or blues are suggested to bring a calming effect to your places of rest. While accenting colors with your decor will add interest and depth to the space. Curtains will frame your windows adding softness to the space. When choosing things, such as pillows, select odd numbers and similar (not the same) patterns to create symmetry. Keeping a cleaned off dresser will give yourself breathing room to maximize the feel of the space. When choosing decor, especially in a bedroom, go for items that add beauty to practicality. If you know you need a watch or wallet on your dresser, place them on a fancy tray or in a basket. Matting a special picture will add an artistic element.

Child's Room:
Point: Tone on tone strips will add interest without causing a distraction. Decorating with things you already have will add sentiment while working with a budget. In order to add a unique element, find childlike storage in a baby stroller or trunk rather than a typical basket or drawer.

Nursery:
Point: When trying to minimize what goes on the wall, use a bold print in your curtain to act as draperies and art. Frame coordinating fabric for inexpensive art. Design smart...a rocking chair is a cozy element that can be removed as the baby grows for more space and a regular dresser can act as a changing table without another piece of furniture taking up precious space. Use elements that will grow with the baby.

Toy Room/Family Room:
Point: You don't have to have a youthful space just because you need to have toys present. Matching baskets or a storage ottoman can provide functional storage while still being attractive. Pairing same-colored items on a shelf can contribute to design and warm up a space. Using cotton curtains in a darker color will allow you to not stress if child finger's find them...they hide use and are washable. Make your space pretty and functional so you can enjoy it along with your child. If flooring is carpet, choose a speckled design or a stain-fighting fiber blend that will tolerate high traffic.

Bathrooms:
Point: When working with a small space, such as a bathroom, enjoy a vibrant color with deep contrasting cabinets/counters. Framing mirrors will allow for an artistic take on something that must be in the space. Decorating with items that you need (such as washcloths on a decorative tray) will decrease clutter and help keep the space visually clean. As much as possible, stay with the same finish on your faucets, shower hooks, knobs, etc. Feel free to use spray paint to update a look without having a greater expense.

Backyard:
Point: What is indoors can be carried outdoors to your living space. Things such as furniture, lighting, rugs, etc. will allow you to warm up a space and make it attractive. Decorate with fresh flowers or vases of fruit and water.

Main Point: There are inexpensive and quick ways to update and enjoy your home in a new way. Sometimes a room just needs a quick de-clutter and rearrangement! Beyond that, it is easy to rotate decor or switch its placement in your home. Paint and curtains will transform a room in an afternoon.
